National 4 Chemistry Assignment Form

The Chemistry Added Value Unit assessment is an assignment. While describing what candidates must do, the published assessment offers considerable flexibility in the choice of a context for the assessment.

In the assessment, candidates apply skills, knowledge and understanding to investigate a topical issue in chemistry and its impact on the environment and/or society. The issue should draw on one or more of the key areas of the Course, and should be chosen with guidance from the assessor.

Centres can access the assessment through their SQA Co-ordinator.

Information on suggested topical issues can be found in the National 4 Chemistry Course and Unit Support Notes. It is not mandatory to use any of the topical issues suggested. A resource pack for one possible context for this assignment is also included in the National 4 Chemistry Course and Unit Support Notes.

As with all SQA Unit assessments, Added Value Unit assessments must be internally verified by centres.

These documents contain details of Unit assessment task(s), show approaches to gathering evidence and how the evidence can be judged against the Outcomes and Assessment Standards. Teachers/lecturers can arrange access to these confidential documents through their SQA Co-ordinator.

We are publishing examples of candidate evidence with commentaries as part of our Understanding Standards programme. These materials are for teachers and lecturers to help them develop their understanding of the standards required for assessment. As these materials become available, they are being published in the following locations:

  • Available from our secure website Materials relating to Unit assessment, internally assessed components of Course assessment, and externally assessed components of Course assessment which are subject to visiting assessment. Teachers and lecturers can arrange access to these materials through their SQA Co-ordinator.
  • Available from our Understanding Standards website Materials relating to externally assessed components of Course assessment, with the exception of those subject to visiting assessment.

More information on our Understanding Standards programme, can be found on our Understanding Standards page.

There was no verification activity at this level in 2017.

In light of latest SQA changes I'm taking the opportunity to perform some reasonably major 'tweaks'/updates to the N5 Topics I teach.

I've reduced Topic 1 to just Reaction Rates and found time to update some questions as well as produce an Answer Booklet (protected - usual password).

As I'm teaching Book 1 at the moment, I decided to finish the job and produce Book 2.

Just Tested Topic 1 and started Topic 2 so already slipping behind schedule. Lunchtimes to catch up with unfinished Outcome 1's - here we go again!

I was asked to compare my assignment marks with other subjects in my school, which would be difficult to do, but I've extracted the SQA data from a spreadsheet they produced showing average marks per subject which I'm posting below for anyone interested.

N5 Chemistry Update 46

Posted Sat, 23 Aug 2014 10:48:00 GMT by Gordon Watson.

Getting ready to mark a batch of N5 Outcome 1's and was trying to remember if the SQA had ever produced any exemplification similar to the Assignment 'Mark Scheme'. It would appear that they didn't.

Anyway I ended up at LTS and noticed a few new (to me) documents providing Route Maps for N4, N5 & Higher which are mainly just links to documents on the SQA site but may still be useful to see them all listed (with links) as they are not always obvious when on the SQA website.

N5 Chemistry Update 45

There were many times last year when I felt the pupils needed to be more aware of the Key Areas but realised that it was difficult for them (and me) to filter it out from the rest of the course.

Probably the proverbial hammer/walnut but I'm going to be issuing each with a non-consumable A5 booklet. I'm also posting the spreadsheet that I set up to organise the Key Areas in the first place. I've included the Unit 3 key Areas that I do in earlier Units twice.

Getting ready for next week. Attempted a (very) provisional timeline. Also, towards end of last year I amended the Spreadsheet to allow for retesting of Key Areas.

I always converted a completed set of Topic Notes into an ActivStudio FlipChart for use on my Promethean Board. The Text misssing from Pupil Notes is 'hidden' behind white pen which can be revealed by the eraser when needed.

Latest version of ActivStusio allows a file to be saved in a format that can be imported into Smart boards. If this works for Topic 7 then I'll try and convert the other Topics too.

Realised whilst marking 2.3 Paragraphs, that pupils needed more help in distinguishing what was and what isn't N5 Knowledge. Will also be useful when preparing for 2.1 Statements. Have therefore, produced a more 'pupil friendly' listing of the Key Areas.

As I have also included some Unit 3 work, I've got a Unit 1 (Plus) version as well.

N5 Chemistry Update 23

Posted Thurs, 12 Dec 2013 21:22:00 GMT by Gordon Watson.

Been 'bogged down' preparing and attempting an Outcome 1 Investigation. Struggled at first to mark them but arrived at a 'mark scheme' which, after crucial input from my colleague, I'm reasonably confident is 'fit for purpose'.

Then occurred to me that perhaps pupils would find something similar useful as a means of focusing their ideas before attempting the written report. I've produced a blank Word version which people can adapt to suit.

Finally, we noticed a while ago that, in the Spreadsheet, I'd only broken the Plan section into 5 sub-sections (as it is in Science) instead of 6 sub-sections ( a to f ) as it is in Chemistry. Spreadsheet has now been updated.

In addition, I am going to use Topic 4 to set up a formal attempt at Outcome 1 and Outcomes 2.2, 2.3 using the context of Acid Erosion. This is based on some work done by RSC. I'm posting Preview's (very subject to change) and the original RSC document for anyone interested.

I was asked to have a go and this is what I've produced. There is a 'blank' generic Science version and a Chemistry version with things like Unit Titles, Key areas etc already included.

Though it is far from certain to be in N5 exams, I've decided to 'rationalise' the way I was doing proton neutron ratios to simplify and keep in line with questions used in previous Higher exams (just in case).
